Day 7
Soren Lazy in Customs 2
Soren was just losing his fight against Ormyton during their game of Minotaur Street Ninja when Nathaniel Pine's secretary's assistant opened the kiosk door and greeted them, “Hi Guys.”
Ormyton said, “Hi, Yvonne, I've got freshly made peanut butter cookies for you,” while slicing Soren’s cyclops’ head clean off.
“Thank you, your cookies are always a special treat.”
“No problem, I’ll be making them more often from now on. I just got hooked up with a continuous supply of top quality peanut butter. These are going to knock your socks off. Best I’ve ever made.”
“Hi, Yvonne.” Soren said, “How's it going?”
“I wanted you to know Mr. Pine's making a surprise visit today.”
“Looks like it’s time for me to go,” Ormyton said and went back to his own kiosk.
Soren put away the game console and then he and Yvonne walked out of Dispatch and into Receiving.
“Yvonne, do you have a boyfriend?”
She blushed and shook her head.
“What about that guy who's always staring at you?”
Her blush deepened. “Luc? He doesn't stare at me. Besides, we're just friends. I mean,” she shook her head again, “He's never asked me out or anything so...”
“Why don't you ask him?”
She giggled. “What? Oh no! I couldn't do that! I couldn't.”
They came to a welcoming room and stopped walking. Out of the corner of his eye Soren saw Luc coming around the corner. The man stumbled a bit when he saw them and Soren could see his jaw clench. Luc kept moving and rounded the corner. Soren smiled broadly and told Yvonne, “I have a feeling Luc will be asking you out soon.” He loved his job. The perks were fun.
She smiled and said, “why?”
“Just a hunch. Thank you for the warning.”
“You know Mr. pine would approve of a trade. He thought you'd rather be active then in a kiosk.”
“Really? He was trying to be decent?”
“Mr. Pine is always decent. He's a good guy. Uh, speaking of boyfriends, some of the women have been wondering about your relationship with Harlow. Are you two dating?”
“It’s complicated, Yvonne. You see we’re work partners and we’re currently sharing a home, but,” he shook his head, “we can never be in a relationship.” And, because he knew Harlow was listening he said, “The sad truth is that she calls out her exs’ names in bed.”
Yvonne’s eyes flared wide in shock…
“It was one time,” Harlow callously rejoined from inside the welcoming room.
“Two different names though,” he rejoined right back. “one right after the other.”
“Uuh! Stop being a baby about it.”
…and then Yvonne’s eyes softened into compassionate pools of goo and rainbow colored candies. “I’m so sorry,” she gooed all over Soren.
Soren nodded and took in Yvonne’s care. “Still hurts. Work relationship only, Yvonne.”
A few seconds later Soren sauntered into the receiving room wearing a wicked smile.
“You are a jerk,” Harlow threw the words and a wet rag at him. He dodged the rag, but walked right into the words. “Now everyone is going to think I'm evil.”
“No, now they’ll know,” he said, not caring about her ineffectual word artillery.
“Why are you here harassing me?”
“Yvonne just informed me of Pine’s imminent arrival. Get to your kiosk and—”
“No!” she pulled back. “I can't go back there! Damn it, man! I should have known you still hadn't cleared it with Pine!” She got right in his face and growled, “If you screw this up I will explode and take you with me.”
“Down killer,” He said. Then pulled back and held his breath. Then he covered his nose and mouth with his arm. “Do you know it reeks in here?”
“Off course I know!” she snapped with exasperated arm flaps. “A newbie soul took three times to make it. Mucus everywhere. I've only gotten part of it cleaned. I'm behind two rooms because of it and now,” she gestured toward Soren, “this new hold up,” she shook her head and looked woebegone. “This is going to ruin my company record,” she murmured.
“You are a sick woman.”
“There is nothing wrong with pride in a job well done. You might learn a lesson, you slacker.”
“Pride is one thing, this is just gross,” he said. He really looked at the messy room and his skin turned green and his face grim. “If I screw this up I'll unpin the grenade for both of us.”
“Go put on some coveralls, damn it,” Harlow told him. “You can’t look like you’ve been doing nothing even though you have.
“Good point. Don’t be here when I get back,” he said and made for the nearest janitorial closet.
